So, I went to Etno. Etno is a Serbian restaurant on the east side of the city which loves to display its Balkan pride. The interior is richly decorated like you’re on the Adriatic. Resting my sore bones on their beautiful, lively patio and sipping a fluffy cafe latte on a warm summer afternoon was a balm to the soul.
Me and my partner got the two-person meat platter (Mešano Meso), complete with cevaps, sausage, hamburger, vienna schnitzel, shish-kabobs, small rolled schnitzels, pork chops, and homefries, plus a side of their house-made bread with cheese. When I read the paragraph-long list of items in the platter and saw that it was somehow supposedly for only two people, I knew that I had come to the right place.
The house-made bread was spongy and still warm from the oven. The smattering of cream cheese inside just made it even tastier. The shish kabob was made of lean, tender chicken that was chocked full of smokey flavour from the grill. The sausage was INSANELY good. It was peppery and juicy and super flavourful. The hamburger patty was thick and well-seasoned and served as a surprisingly satisfying bite on its own.
The cevaps tasted nostalgic to me; their savoury, juicy, peppery taste reminded me of my grandfather manning the barbeque. The pork chop was perfectly cooked on that same smokey grill. The rolled schnitzel was a picture-perfect golden-brown and was positively overflowing with cream cheese. It was an insane amount of food that proved to be too formidable for the two of us, but that just meant we got leftovers to take home!
Etno is textbook comfort food. Hot bread, fantastic coffee, and enough grilled meats to feed an army is a recipe for a full belly and a good time.
